Community Archaeology in West Kent!

Our members are of all ages and backgrounds and we operate a hands-on approach with members working alongside archaeologists and local experts. We also offer practical workshops and have an active outreach programme where members visit local schools and youth organisations. Members also organise a number of social and fundraising events including visits to archaeological sites, museums and quiz nights.

Our first season of excavation was in the summer of 2015 where we excavated an Iron-Age smelting furnace. The furnace was well preserved and further excavation  revealed other areas of prehistoric activity illustrating how far back occupation of the Southborough Valley extends.

SHAAS was formed in the spring of 2015 as an open access community archaeology group. Our primary goal is to explore our local heritage and encourage active participation from the local community.

If you would like to join us this summer on our 2019 Southborough Valley excavation we are now open for membership. You need nothing but bags of enthusiasm and perhaps something to eat and drink and a waterproof! Click the link below to become a member of SHAAS

 ****EVENTS FOR 2019 *****

The Digging Season is here - hooray!

The Digging season has started as of the end of April

Every Sunday 10am-4pm  (Weather permitting)

At the end of Powdermill Lane, just before the train viaduct on the left. Just bring good work clothes and boots and something to eat and drink for lunch and we can provide the rest.

Currently we are in the process of closing down last years dig and beginning an exciting new one on the site of 'Brokes Mill' an old Wheat Mill dating back to Victorian or Georgian periods.

We have three pits dug already and are beginning to come down on to some fascinating archaeology thanks to our guiding archaeologist. If you are interested in archaeological digging then we are interested in you.
But if for physical reasons you are not able to dig but still hold an interest in history and archaeology then there are other equally important tasks to do with recording and cleaning finds, etc, that we would be grateful for your help in achieving.

SHAAS Members get your trowels and kneelers ready! Want to join in? Pop down and join us on the day.

Membership covers insurance whilst on the dig and helps fund resources for everyone to use.

Like us on Facebook to stay up to date on all the SHAAS events!
